Record Ronaldo nomination as Real Madrid dominate UEFA Team of the Year candidates
Cristiano Ronaldo has been named in UEFA's Team of the Year nominees for a record 14th time as part of an 11-strong contingent from Real Madrid, in a list that also includes fellow usual suspects Lionel Messi and Neymar. Madrid dominated on the domestic and European front last season, clinching a first LaLiga title since 2012 and becoming the first team to defend the Champions League. Portugal superstar Ronaldo was typically at the forefront of their success, scoring 25 league goals and a further 12 in Europe's premier competition. Madrid team-mates Karim Benzema, Marco Asensio, Casemiro, Isco, Toni Kroos, Luka Modric, Dani Carvajal, Marcelo, Keylor Navas and Sergio Ramos – who earned the highest percentage of votes in last year's poll – also made the cut. Barcelona great Messi was prolific despite the Catalans having been mainly overshadowed by their fierce Clasico rivals, while Neymar – who departed Camp Nou for a record-breaking move to Paris Saint-Germain in the last window – is also part of the 50-strong list. Legendary goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon is joined by Argentina star Paulo Dybala, Alex Sandro, Giorgio Chiellini and Miralem Pjanic, while Leonardo Bonucci – who left Juve for AC Milan – is also included. Chelsea coasted to the Premier League title last term, but Eden Hazard is the Blues' only representative. Manchester City's creative king Kevin De Bruyne is nominated alongside team-mate Sergio Aguero, as are Spurs quarter Harry Kane, Christian Eriksen, Dele Alli, and Davinson Sanchez – who spent the first half of 2017 with Europa League finalists Ajax. Manchester United, who beat Ajax in the Europa League final, are represented by Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Paul Pogba, Antonio Valencia and David De Gea. The Team of the Year is voted for by fans on UEFA's official website.

Unpredictable Inter need to improve and repeat last year's Atalanta heroics
Check out the best goals of Matchday 11 in Serie A, including classy finishes from Gonzalo Higuain and Suso. It has been a horrible international week for many Inter fans. After the heartbreak of watching Italy fail to score against Sweden over 180 minutes of turgid football, Inter's only representatives at the World Cup are Ivan Perisic, Marcelo Brozovic (who always plays lights out for Croatia) and Brazil's Miranda. Oh, and Japan defender Yuto Nagatomo, because adding insult to injury is a habit of his, even when he's doing well for club and country. Still, there's a silver lining for the Nerazzurri....

Real Madrid transfer news: Los Blancos enter race for Arsenal target and Lyon hotshot Nabil Fekir

REAL MADRID will rival Arsenal for the signature of Nabil Fekir, according to reports from Spain.

The France international has attracted the attention of some of European football’s biggest clubs including Barcelona and Juventus.

Nabil Fekir has put Premier League clubs on alert by admitting he loves English footballNabil Fekir is reportedly a target for Real MadridReuters

Fekir has long been an important player for French giants Lyon.

The 24-year-old has been one of Ligue 1 side’s standout performers this season with 11 goals and four assists in 11 appearances, two more than he managed during the entirety of last season.

According to SFR Sport, Los Blancos boss Zinedine Zidane has been watching Fekir for some time and is keen to bring his compatriot  to the Spanish capital.

Earlier this week Fekir admitted his desire to eventually play in either the Premier League or La Liga.

He told Le Parisien: “When you are from Lyon, the only French club that you are interested in is Lyon.

“There is nothing that tempts you more than that… Spain and England. Those are the two most attractive leagues, where they love football.

“From a technical point of view, it is neat. It is the best! In Spain, even the smaller teams are not scared of playing. I love the game, the beautiful game.

“The teams that are uniquely looking to be involved in and win duels do not interest me. That is not football. Aside from that, everyone has their preferred style.”

Atletico will have 'same old Griezmann' for El Derbi

Atletico will have 'same old Griezmann' for El Derbi
Antoine Griezmann will be back to his best when Atletico Madrid take on Real Madrid this month and win further titles with the club, says a confident Enrique Cerezo. It has been a difficult start to 2016-17 for Griezmann, who has scored just three goals in 13 appearances in all competitions for Atletico - his last strike for his club came in the 2-1 Champions League defeat to Chelsea on September 27. His slumps comes after heavy interest from Manchester United in the close-season, which he eventually disregarded due to a transfer ban imposed on the club and signed a new contract. Griezmann found the net in France's 2-0 friendly victory over Wales on Friday and Atleti president Cerezo has no doubt the 26-year-old will show his best form against Real Madrid next Saturday. "He hasn't had much luck at the start of this season. He had a fantastic end to the previous season and he is still considered one of the best three players in the world. The advantage is that he is younger and has more of a future than the other two," Cerezo told Marca. "Everybody has their moments. It may be the case that he's not going through the best one right now, but I am convinced that it won't take long for him to be what we all want him to be once again, the Griezmann that he is. "After all he has shown, there's no reason to doubt him or lose confidence in him because of playing five matches not so well. "He will be the same old Griezmann against Real Madrid, one which is feared by defences and loved by Atletico fans." It has been suggested Griezmann will finally depart the Wanda Metropolitano at the conclusion of the campaign, but Cerezo is confident he will remain a key cog for Atleti in the future. He said: "We have put in a lot of effort to keep him and to keep all the players. The problem Griezmann has had is that a series of news stories about other important European clubs wanting him has not benefitted him. "Griezmann is and will be an Atletico player. He is an important player and at an important club and he wants to win titles with Atletico. "He may have had a start to the season which could have been better, but there is a lot left of the LaLiga season for him to show how important he is for the club and how important football is for him." When asked about Griezmann's flirting with United in the close season, Cerezo added: "What important player doesn't play this kind of game? They all do."

Why are Australia playing Honduras in World Cup qualifying play-offs?

Why are Australia playing Honduras in World Cup qualifying play-offs?

AUSTRALIA travel to Honduras for the first leg of their World Cup qualifying play-off.

But how have the two sides ended up playing each other?

Australia take on Honduras in the intercontinental World Cup qualifying play-offAFP or licensors Why are Australia playing Honduras in the World Cup qualifying play-off?

Australia qualified for their match against Honduras by finishing third in their Asian World Cup qualifying group, behind Japan and Saudi Arabia.

That meant they progressed to a match against the other Asian third placed team, Syria.

Tim Cahill netted twice in a dramatic 3-2 aggregate win, meaning that they progressed to the intercontinental play-off.

Honduras qualified with an equally dramatic victory over Mexico.

With El Tri already qualified, the Hondurans came from 2-0 down to pip the United States for fourth position in North America, and a play-off place.

How do the intercontinental play-offs work?

The intercontinental play-offs work on a rotational basis.

In 2018 World Cup qualifying, the matches are as follows:

4th placed North American team vs Winner of Asian play-off

1st placed Oceania team vs 5th placed South American team

That means Honduras face Australia over two legs while New Zealand take on Peru.

In 2014, it was Asia vs South America as Jordan were beaten 5-0 on aggregate by Uruguay, while Mexico beat New Zealand 9-3 on aggregate in the North America vs Oceania tie.

And in 2022 it will be Asia vs Oceania and North America vs South America in the intercontinental play-off.

Dani Alves claims moves to Liverpool, Chelsea and Real Madrid were close
Paris Saint-Germain right-back Dani Alves claims moves to Liverpool, Chelsea and Real Madrid all fell through before he joined Barcelona from Sevilla. Alves spent the best part of six years at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan and established himself as one of Europe's most exciting youngsters, attracting interest from all over the continent as he helped the club to win back-to-back UEFA Cup titles. He moved on to Barcelona for €35million in 2008, but could have ended up at any of a number of top clubs, if his latest claims are to be believed. Liverpool were strongly linked with the Brazilian in 2006 and, although reports at the time suggested the club were not willing to meet Sevilla's £8m asking price, Alves believes an agreement was more or less finalised before the transfer collapsed, a situation he also experienced with Chelsea and Madrid. "I pretty much had an agreement with Liverpool," the Paris Saint-Germain right-back told FourFourTwo. "But for whatever reason it didn't happen at the last moment and I really don't know why, as I wasn't the one conducting the negotiations. I had other people representing me back then. "Something similar happened later in my career with Chelsea and Real Madrid. Of course, it all worked out happily for the cules [Barcelona fans] in the end, and also for me, as I was able to write an amazing story at the Camp Nou instead. "I wanted to win things that I unfortunately couldn't win if I stayed at Sevilla. We came close, but I don't like to be just close. "Six months before the transfer window opened I'd been told of Barca's interest, and I said I'd like to play for them because of the fine history of Brazilians there, the greatness of the club and the style of football. "So it was a successful union and I will always be grateful to Pep Guardiola, Txiki Begiristain and Joan Laporta, as they gave me the opportunity to become a big star," he added, referring to the coach, director of football and president respectively at the time that he joined.  Liverpool and Chelsea certainly missed out on Alves in his prime, but he would still be happy to play in England before he retires. He added: "I still have this ambition, yes [to play in England]. But I don't know if it will happen now. I think there are plenty of things to do here first with PSG."

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte admits he’s very ‘worried’ after shambolic defeat to Roma

CHELSEA manager Antonio Conte has admitted he’s “worried” about the level of his team’s performance against Roma.

The Blues were a defensive shambles in the Eternal City – conceding after just 39 seconds en route to a 3-0 defeat by the Serie A side.

AFP or licensors Antonio Conte was not impressed with Chelsea’s 3-0 defeat to Roma[/caption]

After that early goal, former Roma defender Antonio Rudiger made a terrible error of judgement to allow Stephan El Sharaawy to score his second, before Diego Perotti scored a long-range effort.

Conte, who has seen his side fail to put in a convincing performance in the last month, was clearly not impressed with what he saw.

He said: “When you lose 3-0, it means it wasn’t a good performance. Our first half was good, we created many chances to score, but to be 2-0 down was unfair.

“But in the second half, it was a really bad performance. Roma showed more will to fight and more desire to win the game.

“I’m very disappointed with our second half. For this performance, we all have to take responsibility.

“It’s very difficult now, but we have to analyse the game. We need to work on the tactical aspect.

“Tonight was a bad night for us. Just one night, I hope.”

BT Sport pundit and former England captain Steven Gerrard said that the performance was the worst of the Conte era at Chelsea.
