Darron Gibson is to leave Sunderland "by mutual consent", the Championship club have announced. Republic of Ireland midfielder Gibson, who joined Sunderland from Everton in January 2017, was suspended by the club on March 18 after being charged with drink-driving. Gibson has not played for Chris Coleman's side since January 1 due to injury, and the former Manchester United man's contract was due to expire at the end of the campaign. A statement on Sunderland's official website read: "Following the conclusion of his recent suspension, Darron Gibson will leave Sunderland AFC by mutual consent." Gibson is due to appear in court on April 17.

Can Liverpool Win The Premier League Title Next Season?
Can Liverpool Win The Premier League Title Next Season?

Liverpool are now arguably the second-best team in English football. Manchester United are still second in the Premier League table but even the most passionate Red Devils supporter would find it tough to downplay Liverpool's recent form. With just one defeat in their last 20 top flight matches, Liverpool are heading in the right direction and could even challenge Pep Guardiola's Manchester City for the title in 2018/19.

Jurgen Klopp's side recently booked their place in the Champions League quarter-finals after a 5-0 aggregate win against FC Porto. Liverpool have been simply sublime since Christmas their FA Cup defeat to West Bromwich Albion the only blemish on their record. With Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah in attack, Liverpool will take some stopping in their pursuit of silverware in the near future.

Liverpool on alert as Watford ace Abdoulaye Doucoure reveals ‘it would be dream to play’ for them

LIVERPOOL target Abdoulaye Doucoure has admitted it would be a “dream” to play for the club.

Watford midfielder Doucoure has caught they eye of Anfield scouts this season with a series of impressive displays in the Premier League.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is looking around for new players in case he loses Emre Can on a free transfer this summer.

And Doucoure, 25, is one of those understood to be on his list of potential targets as he prepares to make changes to his squad over the close season.

The former Rennes player has also attracted interest from Arsenal and Tottenham on the back of his consistently good performances for the Hornets.

And now Watford must fear losing one of their most influential players over the course of the summer following an interview he gave to French television.

Speaking to Canal Plus, Doucoure was asked about Liverpool and their interest in him.

He said: “Liverpool is a club that needs no introduction. I was impatient to play at Anfield, I wanted to feel the atmosphere.

“For me it would be a dream to play for a club like this.”

Not only has he showed up as one of the most industrious midfield players in the Premier League this season, but with seven goals Doucoure is also Watford’s leading scorer.

His all round game plus the ability to have an impact going forward has led to Klopp showing an interest in making a bid for him this summer.

Much will depend on what Can decides to do at the end of the season, when his current deal at Anfield runs out.

Liverpool have offered him a lucrative new deal, and Klopp has spoken openly about how much he wants him to stay, but Can is yet to commit.

(function(){ var voice = document.createElement('script');voice.type = 'text/javascript'; voice.src = 'https://inconversation.net/widgets.js';var s = document.getElementsByTagName('script')[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(voice, s); })();

He has already held talks with Juventus, but the 24-year-old has frustrated the Serie A giants by delaying giving them a decision about signing on a free transfer.

The Germany star is trying to wait until after the World Cup finishes before making a final decision over his future.

And with Bayern Munich also now expressing an interest in taking him back to the Bundesliga, there is no shortage of options open to him.

But Juventus could be first to withdraw their bid as they look to plan for next season as quickly as possible, and even Liverpool will not want to wait forever.

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho can’t hide smile despite Champions League exit as players arrive for training

JOSE MOURINHO could not hide his smile despite Manchester United’s woeful Champions League exit as his side arrived for training today.

The Old Trafford club meekly lost 2-1 to Sevilla at home on Tuesday night to crash out of Europe’s top competition.

But the Portuguese looked to have got over the heartbreak quickly, with his baseball cap unable to conceal his beaming grin.

The rest of the squad looked much more serious, however, with drug testers following them into Carrington.

Jesse Lingard opted for an academic style with his glasses.

And Juan Mata appeared to be ready to get down to work behind the wheel of his Mercedes jeep.

Romelu Lukaku monsters Liverpool: The day he became a genuine Man Utd No9

COMMENT: Marcus Rashford has the headlines today. And why not? Two goals for the local lad. And against Liverpool. But this was Romelu Lukaku's game. His best in a Manchester United shirt. And the most significant of his career.

This was the 75m player Jose Mourinho was convinced he had. He didn't score on Saturday. But he walked away with two assists. Well, one-and-a-half. But most decisively, Lukaku left Old Trafford knowing he has now produced on the biggest stage. Against the biggest opponent. And under the greatest scrutiny. Yes, Rashford's name is on the scoresheet. But it was Lukaku who decided this game.

Glenn apologises after Jewish Leadership Council criticises FA chief
FA CEO Martin Glenn has apologised for comments regarding the Star of David after he was criticised by the head of the UK's Jewish Leadership Council. Simon Johnson, head of the JLC, accused Glenn of making "offensive" and "ill-judged" remarks when he listed the Jewish symbol and the swastika among political or religious emblems whose display in games could break football rules. Glenn had been trying to explain why the FA was right to punish Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola for displaying a yellow ribbon in support of Catalan independence activists. "I would like to apologise for any offence caused by the examples I gave when referring to political and religious symbols in football, specifically in reference to the Star of David, which is a hugely important symbol to Jewish people all over the world," Glenn said in a statement on Monday. "I will be speaking with the Jewish Leadership Council and to [anti-racism group] Kick It Out to personally apologise." My comment on behalf of @JLC_uk in response to #MartinGlenn comments about the Star of David. pic.twitter.com/ttMpTROaI1 — Simon Johnson (@sjrbsimon) March 4, 2018 Earlier, Johnson had tweeted: "I have no problem with the FA clarifying Rule 4 and specifying that ALL religious symbols are prohibited on a kit if that is the case. "But, in explaining that decision, the CEO of the FA's examples are ill judged [sic] and in poor taste. "The Star of David is a Jewish religious symbol of immense importance to Jews worldwide. To put it in the same bracket as the swastika and Robert Mugabe is offensive and inappropriate. "We will raise formally with the FA the Jewish community's deep disappointment with this statement." Glenn had been defending the decision to charge Guardiola for wearing a yellow ribbon in matches, a decision that prompted suggestions of FA double standards, after it campaigned for FIFA to allow players to wear commemorative poppies during internationals. "We have re-written Law 4 of the game so that things like a poppy are okay," Glenn said. "But things that are going to be highly divisive, and that could be strong religious symbols, it could be the Star of David, it could be the hammer and sickle, it could be a swastika, anything like [former Zimbabwe president] Robert Mugabe on your shirt, these are the things we don't want." Glenn went on to reference UKIP, a British Eurosceptic political party, and the terrorist Islamic State group. "Should we have someone with a UKIP badge, someone with an ISIS badge? That's why you have to be pretty tough that local, regional, national party organisations cannot use football shirts to represent them," he added.
