Chelsea transfer news: Gary Cahill considering quitting amid reports of £44m Daniele Rugani arrival

GARY CAHILL could follow Thibaut Courtois and Eden Hazard out of the Chelsea exit door.

The club captain is contemplating quitting the club with reports that new boss Maurizio Sarri is in the market for a new central defender with Juventus’ Daniele Rugani firmly in his sights.

The 32-year-old also struggled to impress last season with Antonio Rudiger taking his spot in defence for a period of the season.

Cahill, who has also lost his starting position in the England set-up, is fearing another season on the substitute bench.

The former Bolton man has spent six years with the club, winning six major trophies but now feels it could be his time to move on, according to the Standard.

He will hold talks with the new gaffer once he returns from holiday as he continues his recovery from reaching the World Cup semi-finals with the Three Lions.

Cahill has just one year left on his deal and it will be the club’s last chance to secure a fee for his signature or risk losing him for nothing in 12 months.

Sarri faces a tough task of keeping some of his key assets at the club with the futures of Hazard and Courtois shrouded in doubt.

Hazard made it clear that he wants his dream move to Real Madrid this summer when he revealed after the World Cup: “Everyone knows my preferred destination.”

His international team-mate Courtois is also attempting to steer a move to the Bernabeu.

Eden Hazard and Thibaut Courtois will be given a three-week holiday, putting their potential moves to Real Madrid in jeopardyEden Hazard and Thibaut Courtois are both being lined up for a move to Real MadridAFP

The keeper holds all the power with just 12 months left on his contract.

Courtois’ family all still reside in Madrid which only adds to his desire to return to the Spanish capital.

Chelsea could battle with Liverpool for Roma’s Alisson as a replacement.

Talking Tactics: Four lessons we learnt from World Cup semi-finals
Talking Tactics: Four lessons we learnt from World Cup semi-finals

It isn't coming home after all. England's valiant World Cup campaign came to an end on Wednesday night with a disappointing extra-time defeat to Croatia that can be blamed on a mixture of tiredness and inexperience both mentally and tactically. Gareth Southgate has created a joyous England team, which is no small feat, but ultimately did not have a plan B as Croatia's cool-headed midfielders began to control the game.

Belgium will also rue a missed opportunity for their golden generation. Roberto Martinez was surprisingly conservative in his tactical decisions, leaving his side too static to break down such a stern France defence. For Eden Hazard, Kevin de Bruyne, and Vincent Kompany, their dreams of lifting the World Cup trophy are over.

Juve's Ronaldo deal prompts strike from Fiat workers
Juventus spending €112million on Cristiano Ronaldo has been followed by an Italian trade union announcing Fiat workers in Melfi will go on strike. Juve, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) and CNH Industrial (CNHI) are all owned by the holding company Exor, which is controlled by the Agnelli family. The Serie A champions' move for the five-time Ballon d'Or winner has prompted a fierce response from the Unione Sindicale di Base (USB), which declared workers at a plant in the south of the country will down tools from July 15 until July 17. "It is unacceptable that while FCA and CNHI workers continue to make huge economic sacrifices, the company then spends hundreds of millions of euros on the purchase of a player," a statement from the USB read. "We are told it's a difficult moment, that we need to resort to social safety nets, waiting for the launch of new models that never arrive. "And while the workers and their families tighten their belts more and more, the company decides to invest a lot of money on a single human resource! "Is this right? It is normal for one person to earn millions, while thousands of families can't even get to the middle of the month? "We are all employees of the same owner, but in this moment of enormous social difficulty this difference in treatment cannot and must not be accepted. "The Fiat workers have made the company's fortune for at least three generations … and in return they have only ever received a life of misery. "The company should invest in car models that guarantee the futures of thousands of people rather than enriching only one. "That should be the objective, a company that puts the interests of their employees first. If it isn't, it's because they prefer the world of games, entertainment and everything else. "For the reasons described, the Unione Sindacale di Base has declared a strike at FCA Melfi between 22:00 on Sunday July 15 and 06:00 on Tuesday July 17."

Why does Uruguay manager Oscar Tabarez have a walking stick and drive a mobility scooter?

URUGUAY boss Oscar Tabarez’s managerial career spans 38 years and includes 16 posts.

The 71-year-old has coached in Colombia, Argentina, Italy and Spain, and first managed the Uruguay national team from 1988 to 1990.

He returned for a second spell in 2006 and has been going strong ever since.

Before hanging up his playing boots Tabarez was a tough-tackling defender for six clubs.

He’s also worked as a primary school teacher…

So it comes as no surprise to note that Tabrez has been awarded the Fifa Order of Merit, having been at the helm for Uruguay at the Copa America five times.

This is his fourth World Cup and he’s already reached the round of 16 two times, and the semi-finals once in 2010.

So, Oscar Tabarez is still managing Uruguay but why does he use a walking stick and sometimes a mobility scooter?

Tabarez has an illness. originally reported in 2016 to be Guillain-Barre syndrome.

This is a serious condition in which the body’s immune system attacks the central nervous system, usually after a viral or bacterial infection.

But Tabarez say he is he is suffering from “chronic neuropathy.”

He explains: “My illness, I have talked about with who I need to talk about it with.

“All the higher ups at the AUF knew that I had to move around in a cart. There are days where I am better than others.

“There are some days where I can move on my own, some others no. Still, nothing changes with my job, or dealing with players.”

How did the soccer world react to Tabarez ‘s illness when he was first diagnosed?

AC Milan posted a message in support of their former head coach when he first battled ill health.

At that stage two years ago Uruguay boss was determined to carry on, saying:

“I will continue [as Uruguay coach] — at least until the results say otherwise.

“When you are coach you know you are displayed by the results.”

However, club chiefs are reportedly preparing to sit down with Paulinho’s agent to discuss the offer.

The Spanish champions signed the Tottenham flop for £36.4m from Guangzhou Evergrande in August of last year.

Uruguay v France: Laxalt backs daunting defence to deal with Mbappe
Uruguay v France: Laxalt backs daunting defence to deal with Mbappe
Diego Laxalt is confident Uruguay are strong enough as a defensive unit to deal with France forward Kylian Mbappe in Friday's World Cup quarter-final. Mbappe scored twice in a standout display in the 4-3 win over Argentina in the last 16, helping Didier Deschamps' side reach the last eight for the third time in the past four World Cup finals. The 19-year-old's performance, coupled with France's general strength in depth in attack, makes them favourites to overcome Oscar Tabarez's team in Nizhny Novgorod, even though Uruguay have lost only one of the last eight meetings. The Euro 2016 finalists are unbeaten in nine World Cup games against South American opponents, keeping clean sheets in seven of those, and the spirited win over Argentina showcased the formidable strength they have going forward. With Edinson Cavani unlikely to be fully fit for the game, having suffered a muscle injury in the 2-1 win over Portugal, Uruguay's chances appear to be growing slimmer. However, Uruguay have won seven matches in a row and conceded only once in that time, and Laxalt is confident they can use that defensive solidity to see off France, even if only one half of the fearsome forward partnership of Cavani and Luis Suarez is available. 12 - Luis Suárez has now provided the assist for 12 of Edinson Cavani's 44 goals for Uruguay (27%). "We have to start from the defensive strength we showed against Portugal and also in the group stage, then we have to follow the guidance of El Maestro [Tabarez] for this match. "Obviously, we should give Mbappe the least space possible, so he cannot make the most of this speed. But I think that defending en masse, as we have been doing until now, will make it tough for them." Blaise Matuidi is rather hoping old Paris Saint-Germain team-mate Cavani will not be ready, although he does not think Uruguay should be taken lightly even if the forward is not available. The midfielder, who is banned for Friday's game, told a news conference: "I've known Edinson for quite a long time. I know him well enough to tell you that he's a very generous player who never gives up. I'm sure that he'll do everything in his power until the very last moment to be on the pitch.  "Obviously, Uruguay are not the same without Cavani. We all know his qualities because he's a great striker. He showcased it well during this World Cup. But other players are able to replace him, that's for sure." He will be key to stopping Mbappe down France's right wing. France – Kylian Mbappe It had to be, right? Mbappe was devastating against Argentina and looks like France's most lethal weapon at the moment. This Uruguay defence, marshalled by Diego Godin, will be a serious test of his powers.   KEY OPTA STATS - This is Uruguay's first appearance in the quarter-final of the World Cup since 2010, when they beat Ghana 4-2 on penalties following a 1-1 draw. - France have progressed on four of the last five occasions they have reached the quarter-final stage, with the only exception being a 0-1 defeat against Germany in 2014. - France forward Kylian Mbappe has had five shots at the 2018 World Cup, with all five going on target and three of them ending up as goals. - Team-mate Antoine Griezmann has scored six goals in his last five appearances in the knockout stages of major tournaments (World Cup and European Championships). - Each of Uruguay's last three goals in the 2018 World Cup have been scored by Edinson Cavani.
